Precedents & example documents
CRC is concerned to share good practice in the management of Reader (LLM) ministry. This page brings together useful documents and forms. Some of these have been shared by Wardens of dioceses as examples of their practice.
Bishops’ Regs
The Bishops’ Regulation for Reader Ministry sets out the regulations agreed by the House of Bishops in 2000. The introduction states “These Regulations clarify the basis of their duties and the practice of their ministry, and provide a common understanding to be applied in all dioceses.”
Since they were published the Canons that they quote have been revised considerably to take account of safeguarding regulations so you are advised to refer to the up-to-date canons for these here.
Ministry Agreement
Every Reader (LLM) should have “a written agreement with their incumbent or minister over the duties to be undertaken by the Reader” (Bishops’ Regulation 5.2). These vary from diocese to diocese.
Annual Return
Example of a useful form.
Regular review by warden
Bishops’ Regulation 5.4 says “Readers should undergo a formal in-depth review of their ministry ; dioceses will vary in their requirement but it is recommended that such a review take place every three or five years”
